I was fortunate to learn of ICReDD’s MANABIYA Program from a former coworker who is currently an Assistant Prof. in ICReDD, Simon Cooper. I had a strong interest in pursuing an international research experience as a part of my doctoral training, and given the excellent research environment of Hokkaido University in general and ICReDD in particular, it was very exciting to learn that the MANABIYA Program could enable such an exchange.
As I had independently developed an interest in mechanochemistry, I decided to apply to the Ito Laboratory in particular. I decided to perform a 3.5-week research exchange at Hokudai where I was lucky to be mentored by Profs. Hajime Ito and Koji Kubota alongside a senior
doctoral student, Keisuke Kondo, on the development of a reductive mechanochemical reaction method. The Ito lab (as well as ICReDD more broadly) was very well equipped for this research project with access to a wealth of analytical and experimental instruments alike.

In addition to interacting with members of the Ito lab, I was also able to participate in several other activities organized by ICReDD which enriched my experience overall. This includes attending a research seminar delivered by Prof. Benjamin List, meeting with several other members of ICReDD (e.g. Prof. Tsuyoshi Mita and Prof. Nobuya Tsuji), as well as receiving a tour of ICReDD’s recently constructed facilities.
Outside of the excellent academic environment of Hokudai and ICReDD, the surrounding city of Sapporo is incredibly culturally rich. Hokkaido is recognized both within and beyond Japan for its unique history (founding of Sapporo Agricultural College and Dr. William S. Clark), notable food traditions (origin of miso ramen and soup curry), and beautiful scenery (Hokkaido Jingu and City of Otaru). I was fortunate to explore these aspects during my days off and found Sapporo and the surrounding areas to be incredibly welcoming and vibrant.
Overall, I consider this experience to be a highlight of my doctoral training. Learning about ICReDD’s commitment to interdisciplinary chemistry and being introduced to members of the diverse and dynamic team they are assembling was very gratifying. My hosts, Profs. Ito and Kubota were excellent mentors who not only helped expand my experimental skillset but also provided me the opportunity to share about my prior experiences and academic background. The Ito group in general were all very kind and ensured that I had an excellent experience. I strongly recommend the MANABIYA program to anyone who wants to become connected to the increasingly global community of chemistry.
I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to the Ito Laboratory, ICReDD, as well as Hokudai for providing me with this unique opportunity!
