MANABIYA Manuscript Platinum(II) chiral diene catalyst enables enantioselective [4+2] cycloaddition via Pt(II)/Pt(IV) cycle

The MANABIYA System is a program by which researchers from other institutes, universities and companies can come to ICReDD for a short-term period of training and joint research. The following paper includes contributions that were made possible by the participation of co-author Shun Nishibe in the MANABIYA System. He was at ICReDD for six weeks during Aug-Sept 2020 and worked under Prof. Satoshi Maeda, where he used AFIR calculations to gain insight into the mechanism of the reaction he was working on. Shun is a PhD student from the lab of Prof. Takanori Shibata in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Waseda University.

Researchers from Waseda University and ICReDD reported the first example of a Pt(II) chiral diene catalyst in asymmetric synthesis. The catalyst enabled a highly enantioselective formal [4+2] cycloaddition of biphenylenes. Calculations revealed that the reaction proceeds via a Pt (II)/Pt(IV) cycle, which is the first time such a Pt catalytic cycle has been shown to be the mechanism in an enantioselective reaction.
